Most volunteer opportunities are open to all U of S students, regardless of gender or college! Please read the descriptions carefully before volunteering. If you have any questions about the opportunities or wish to sign up, please contact the Discover office at discover.engineering@usask.ca. Please include your hours of availability as well as the position(s) you wish to volunteer for with the subject line "Volunteer DE 2011".
Group leaders work in pairs and are responsible for a group of approximately 20 girls. You will accompany the girls on all tours and activities, and must be available for the entire conference (Friday morning to Saturday evening). A criminal record check is required for this position.
General supervisors will mostly be working with the group leaders to offer extra support and supervision during activities and tours throughout the day, but may also be asked to help with miscellaneous tasks such as registration. You do not need to be available for the entire conference.
Overnight supervisors will stay overnight at the hotel and monitor the hallways. A criminal record check is required. You MUST be female to volunteer for this position. There will be coffee and food provided.
Instructors will be responsible for delivering hands-on science and engineering projects to groups of 20 girls. You will work in pairs and also have the assistance of the group leaders and general supervisors. Most of the project delivery will take place on Saturday.
We are currently looking for dynamic female engineers/engineering students from a variety of disciplines who are interested in participating in a Q&A session on Saturday afternoon. The goal of the Speakers' Panel is to give the girls an idea of the career opportunities available in engineering, so it would be preferable if participants have had some experience in industry or research. This opportunity is NOT restricted to U of S students or graduates so feel free to pass this information along to any interested parties.
Valid criminal record checks are absolutely required for group leaders and overnight supervisors. Criminal record checks can be obtained from any police station, take only a few minutes to complete, and are free for volunteers (information about this will be provided after volunteers are selected).
All volunteers will be required to attend a short training session in early November. Details about these sessions will be provided early in the new year.
